Animal Care

University of Washington: Animal Use Laws & Regulations Training

All students, staff, or faculty working with vertebrates in any way much complete the module entitled "University of Washington: Animal Use Laws and Regulations Training." That is the only module you are required to complete. In the "University of Washington: Animal Use Laws and Regulations Training" module, only Chapters 1-13 and 25-27 are required. Other chapters should only be completed if they are relevant to your work.

Once you complete the training and obtain your Certificate of Completion please keep a hard copy of certificate on file. Students may give a copy to SAFS Student Services for their records. Please keep in mind that the exam will take you at least an one hour to complete and must be finished in one sitting because you will be logged out if you leave your terminal for extended periods of time. If you do not pass the exam with a 100% you will be given the correct answers to the questions you missed and will be required to retake the exam.

Please complete this training before attending labs that require work with vertebrates. Here are the instructions for getting into the course:

  1. Go to http://depts.washington.edu/auts/
  2. Click "Courses" from the menu on the left of the screen.
  3. Choose "Online Courses" at the top of the page. (it may already be defaulted)
  4. Click the link titled "Click Here to Complete Online Courses".
  5. Click the red link: Web Courses and Exams ("I would like to take a web course or exam")
From here, follow the onscreen instructions.
  6. Please make sure you print out a copy of the certification of completion after you have taken the course and exam. NOTE: The website indicates that you can use Netscape 4.7 or higher. However, you will get errors with that version so please either use a newer version of Netscape or use Explorer instead.
